How we're able to step into the mocktail business

This is how we stepped into the mocktail business

I was once told that a business at is most basic level is to have something that people want to buy, and sell it to them. As we're taking our next big steps forward I'm feeling reflective. This is a story from my 1st month as a mocktail entrepreneur and how we strategically, naively and successfully sold out at a large street festival.

It was May 2015 and Brooklyn Academy of Music's big Memorial Day street faire celebration was just a few day's away, and I with my decision to birth & bring Brooklyn Brewed Sorrel to the masses just 2 weeks prior was thrilled by the opportunity.  I wanted to share the goodness of our delicious, complex and exciting Sorrel Mocktail with anyone breathing! Besides, I knew people would love us if we had the opportunity to share. But we had no booth...

So I called around to business owners I knew would be selling there to ask if we could tag team with a little space to sell. I didn’t get any yes’s. I even asked a friend of the family and all i got was the rigamarole. Finally a friend, Yusuf said he knew a guy from Harlem with a restaurant.

He was down to help but all he could offer me was storage space. Fast forward and into the crowd and right across from the previous entrepreneur who wouldn't help I went. Sis was on fiyah(!) sis is me of course. We sold suitcases worth of our mocktail so fast we left early about $1000 richer. When I reached my car I saw a text from our business-owner friend who just yesterday was a no. Guess what he said? "Hey Nzinga, I saw you out there killin it today... want a spot at my booth tomorrow?" My simple response: "Hey (name), thanks! And yes I would love a spot, thanks for the offer!"

Sometimes you gotta show and prove 1st!

"I ordered a large bottle just to give it a try. Needless to say, it was gone in a matter of days... and I didn't share with anyone! I placed another order, this time for several bottles so now I don't have to worry about running out. Love it!
