BBS Firsts: Our anniversary month celebration 🎉

That was our 2nd popup at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Dance Africa festival on Memorial Day weekend 2016. It’s a great festival, people loved us the 1st time and I wanted Brooklyn Brewed Sorrel to be there again.

 

A smaller business than we are now, I came alone and couldn’t afford to rent a full booth so I asked another business, Abu's Bakery, if I could rent a corner of their booth for $50 bucks a day or 15% of sales, 35% if I didn’t have to be there and they’d sell for me. We've been family friends for years and the owner saw my tenacity the previous year when I didn't have a booth and allowed me to set up on a small corner of his table.

 

 They chose $50 a day with me selling and I got to work. With a small corner of a table and space under to store the rest of our inventory, we got plenty of sales and things were profitable.

 

We served hundreds of happy customers and received about $1500 for the pleasure that Memorial Day weekend. We gave samples as always (still do on the website) and people fought for the last bottle and had a blast enjoying our refreshing nonalcoholic sorrel and sharing large bottles with friends and family.

Nowadays we're able to have our own booth at large festivals and have had the pleasure of being able to offer opportunities to smaller businesses.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My advice: Having a great product and amazing service to our customers has taken us very far. I had to drop ideas of perfection and other limiting beliefs.

What I’ve learned: Delivering a great product and amazing service to our customers is what has taken us far.

Very early on I also learned to not be overly concerned about being perfect and think we mustn’t thing we can’t do certain things (like sell at a major festival because booth space is $800 & we were an new boot-strapping business). We are the greatest resources for each-other & I was always open to talking to people and collaborating. Go for it! ⠀
