Bloom Where You’re Planted: A Holiday Story

The holidays. For many, they conjure images of sprawling feasts, glittering decorations, and the warm hum of family. For me, Nzinga Knight, founder of Brooklyn Brewed Sorrel, the holidays have always been deeply tied to the rich, spicy aroma of sorrel brewing slowly on the stove – a taste of home, even when home felt a thousand miles away.

This isn't just about a drink; it's about finding your roots, honoring tradition, and bringing a little piece of your heart to every table you set.

Brooklyn Apartment Beginnings: Brewing Comfort and Pride

Before Brooklyn Brewed Sorrel was gracing shelves and holiday tables, it was bubbling away in my small, cozy Brooklyn apartment kitchen. There were no grand commercial spaces, no fancy equipment – just me, a handful of carefully sourced hibiscus petals and whole spices, and a family recipe passed down through generations.

In those early days, brewing sorrel was more than just a culinary experiment; it was an act of connection. As an entrepreneur trying to make a dream a reality, there were moments of doubt, long hours, and the constant hustle that anyone starting a business knows well.

But each time the familiar scent of simmering sorrel filled my apartment, it was a reminder of my Caribbean heritage, a grounding force, and a promise that something truly special was coming to life.

It was in that humble kitchen, surrounded by the aromatic blend of hibiscus, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves, that I truly began to bloom where I was planted. The process of slow-brewing, of carefully balancing flavors, became a meditation, a source of comfort, and eventually, a deep sense of pride. Each bottle poured was a piece of my story committed to authenticity, heritage, and flavor.

Crafting Memorable, Instagram-Worthy Holiday Tables

The holidays are about creating memories, and a beautifully presented table can be the backdrop to some of the most cherished ones. Here are my tips for making your holiday table not just delicious, but truly unforgettable – and yes, perfectly Instagram-worthy!

1. Embrace Layers & Textures

Mix fabrics, colors, and natural elements to add warmth and depth to the table.

2. Let Nature Be Your Muse

Rosemary, pine, citrus peels, or cranberries bring seasonal scent and beauty.

3. Lighting is Everything

Use candles and soft light to create intimacy and celebration.

4. Elevate Your Drinks

Our vibrant ruby hue makes Brooklyn Brewed Sorrel the centerpiece of the table.

5. Showcase with Clear Glassware

Let the color shine. Tall, elegant glasses create visual magic.

6. Garnish Generously

Fresh herbs, citrus wheels, or candied ginger make a drink feel special.

7. Create a Mocktail Bar

Make your guests part of the experience – fun, interactive, and elegant.

8. Personal Touches

Handwritten notes, name cards, or a small gift speak to thoughtfulness and love.

This holiday season, remember the beauty of tradition and the joy of intentional gatherings. Brooklyn Brewed Sorrel is more than a drink — it’s an invitation to savor, remember, and celebrate.

Happy Holidays from my Brooklyn kitchen to yours.

"I ordered a large bottle just to give it a try. Needless to say, it was gone in a matter of days... and I didn't share with anyone! I placed another order, this time for several bottles so now I don't have to worry about running out. Love it!
